George Cooke 1793-1849

By Donald D. Keyes

George Cooke, born in Maryland, taught himself to paint. After a five year stay in Europe copying the Old Masters he returned to America and took up the life of the itinerant portraitist.

Cook met Daniel Pratt in New Orleans and a fast friendship ensued. Pratt provided studio and gallery space for Cooke in his wsarehouse in New Orleans. When Pratt constructed a personal gallery adjacent to his home in Prattville, Cooke provided most of the paintings.

When Cooke died in 1849, his wife decided it would be appropriate to bury him in Prattville where the Pratt Gallery would serve as a permanent monument to his career. Thus Cookes remains were interred in the Pratt Family Cemetery in Prattville.

This 104 page softbound volume by Donald D. Keyes and published by the Georgia Museum of Art is tastefully produced on slick paper and contains many full color reproductions of the artist's works. The book is not indexed but is fully noted.
