Commentaries on The State of Affairs in India from the Christian Perspective

Commentaries on the State of Affairs: INDIA

"Let Us See The Divine Light"

Dr. A.P.J. Abddul Kalam
The President of India

"Where there is righteousness in the heart
There is a beauty in the character
When there is a beauty in the character
There is harmony in the home
When there is harmony in the home
There is an order in the nation
When there is order in the nation
There is Peace in the world."
-Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
June 19, 2003
(Interaction meeting with Faculty of Anna University)

"Indians are the most interesting people in the world- and the nearest to being incomprehensible...their character and their history, their customs and their religion, confront you with riddles at every turn....India has two million gods, and worships them all.

In religion all other countries are paupers;
India is the only millionaire."

India- Born Again!

"...I write this letter to you from my hotel room in the ancient city of Madras, India......only hours ago, with many great Christian leaders, I stood before a host of precious Indian souls - nearly half a million I am told -as we sent a great prayer and praise service, LIVE VIA SATELLITE, to you and the entire TBN network worldwide. This was the very first such broadcast event in the history of India.
Surely the Apostle Thomas rejoiced to see the city, where he gave his very life for the Gospel, visited again with the mighty power of the Holy Spirit......
India is a land of millions of gods. Even in my hotel I was amazed to see statues of heathen gods in the lobby with offerings of fresh flowers laid daily at their feet. How my heart aches to tell them of the one true and living God.."

"India is shocking, overwhelming, and represents a challenge to the 21st century Body of Christ.

To go to India is to step into a world of polytheism and idolatry that existed before the time of Abraham. However, it is more complicated ....... with 4,000 years of population growth, poverty, urbanization and social injustice. Yet this is also a time of hope for India.

God's timing for a massive revival.

The people are ready to throw off the bonds of the caste system................

The destiny of India impacts the world."

Welcome to India

Those of you who read my newletter are familiar with what I call the "absurdities" column. This is where I relate all of our unusual bizarre experiences in Central Asia or what I have come to affectionately call the "wild east". However just about everything in India appears absurd! Therefore, no need for an absurdities column here! Absurdities are woven throughout!
Before I landed in Delhi, I made sure to make friends with a native Indian on the plane, who could tell me some of the ins and outs of the city. He told me to first exchange some dollars for rupees in the arrivals terminal and then be sure to prepay for a taxi to my destination. So I did. As we rode along the dusty highway, the taxi driver's assistant (there were two of them in the front) assured me that he never heard of the hotel I prepaid him to drive me to! He told me he had a better hotel but it was far from where we were. I said, "No"! I wanted him to find the guesthouse that I was booked in. I did not know what these guys were up to! After about 20 minutes I spotted a building with the name of my guesthouse. I pointed out to them but since we were on the wrong side of the highway we had to take a 20-minute ride in the opposite direction and then needed to back track for another 20 minutes until we finally arrived at this not too inviting guesthouse. It was very hot, the middle of the night and I was both hungry and tired. My room was hotter that it was outside so I asked if they had an air-conditioned room. For about $3 more in rupees they led me to one. I collapsed on the bed and realized there indeed was an air-conditioner but it was not working. I contacted the front desk and they told me there was a power cut. I thought, "Welcome to India!"

Hindu Chariot with priests taking idols to the temple

"India is unlike any place I have preached the gospel...

in a village just outside of the main city of over 15 million people....idols are seen on the roadside everywhere, the spiritual oppression is great, but when deep darkness covers the people, we will have the manifestation of the Glory ."

"While she struggles to forge a place among the leading nations of the world,

India is still a land of darkness.

As the fastest growing nation in the world, India now has a population........soon to exceed a billion people, and 97% are unsaved."

"India has some serious problems....

The list of Indian woes seems endless..... Nearly half the Indian population lives below a poverty line that has, to put it mildly, been drawn just this side of the funeral pyre:

to be poor in India is to be unable to manage the basic elements of human subsistence

.....to be poor is to be born of a malnourished mother in conditions where your survival is uncertain; to survive with inadequate food, clothing, and shelter, without the stimulation of learning or play; to grow unequipped intellectually or physically to be a productive member of a striving society. That such conditions still afflict 350 million Indians is worse than a tragedy - it is a shame.

The challenge of Indian democracy is to meet the basic material needs of all Indians..."

Beggar Widow on the Street, India

"The records of history present India, up until the 18th Century, as the world's wealthiest nation....

The Bible refers to the riches of India,

( II Chronicles 9:10,21)

telling us that the 'ships of Tarshish' brought to King Solomon 'gold and silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks' and 'algum (sandalwood) trees and precious stones' from Ophir (Sopara on the Bombay coast). Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador (4th century B.C.) has left us a detailed picture of India's properity. Pliny (1st Century A.D.) tells us the Romans annually spent fifty million sesterces ($5,000,000) on imports from India....then a vast marine power..... Columbus, discovering the New World in the 15th Century, was in reality seeking a shorter trade route to India....

the problems that beset a newly freed India today will surely be solved in time by those great men whom India has never failed to produce..."

"We arrived in India and were immediately traumatized by the extreme culture shock we experienced. The flight had been been long and grueling, but nothing compared to what we were seeing before us now. I bit back tears of horror and pain....I was simply shocked into numbness by all the idolatry I saw. My heart broke every day in ways I cannot explain as I beheld one horrid idol after another.

I saw such poverty as I have never seen before.

We saw people on the streets sleeping wherever they could find a place to lay their heads....

starvation, hunger, disease and dying..... there are hundreds of thousands of orphans in India......'Forlorn India' were the words that haunted my heart".

"India, My Great Love"

Beloved India became my great love. I always say "... India was my great love". Twelve times I have served God in that nation. I would gladly have laid down my life for The Lord in India. One of the greatest joys of my life of service to God was when He called me to raise a tent and preach in many parts of North India.

"Tens of thousands of people die every day in India without knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. Please pray for the people of India, that their eyes will be opened and that they will repent of their sins and turn to Christ. Pray also for Christians throughout India, that God will strengthen and encourage them in the days ahead.

We need to support our Indian brothers and sisters as they take the Gospel

to the 900 million unevangelized people in this vast nation."

Evangelism Crusade Team, India

"I was on a major highway travelling North from India's capital, Dehli. Every 2 or 3 minutes, we'd pass a different village and on occasion I'd ask the driver to stop. I'd approach the village people along the busy road and ...ask the people...'Have you ever heard of a person called Jesus?' ...This was the third village and I heard the same response. 'No, we've never heard of such a person'....My heart was crying, 'God, how long must it be before they hear the good news?'....

India is a huge mission field.

So many have not heard the name of Jesus even once. The results of raw heathenism in India are such that I can barely speak about it....."

Indian Orphan crippled from polio

"India is...one nation where we help support orphans.

Edith Greet ...left America and her fiance, family and friends for Kerala, India...some 52 years ago. With $12 in her pocket, she felt 'called of God to help save homeless little orphans whom no one else wanted'. Though she never married, she has been like a mother to thousands of little boys and girls, some of whom are now leaders in India."

"Think of India as a continent of 1600 nations, rather than one nation.

No greater convergence of diverse peoples, religions, and languages exists on this planet than this great homeland of 1 billion people.

While about 82% are Hindus, over 100 million Muslims live there as well."

"India shall be saved, Oh India shall be saved"

A Prayer for Revival India

Gateway to India, Mumbai (Bombay)

"Father, we desire to see India saved, healed, and delivered into the Kingdom of Your Dear Son. Place Your mantle of Glory and Honor upon Your Servants who are preaching and teaching and bringing Your everlasting Gospel, the "Good News" of your Kingdom, to the peoples of the nation of India. We lay claim to India, a nation mentioned twice by name in your Holy Word (Esther 1:1, 8:9). We declare and decree that India shall be among the nations worshipping in the New Jerusalem! You, O Holy One of Israel, who magnify Your Word above Your Name, send forth the magnification of Your Almighty Power upon Your Word as it goes forth in the nation of India. For the sake of the King of Glory, Your Only Begotten Son, Saviour of the World, Light to the Nations, King of Peace, Yeshua Messiah, for it is in His Name, THE NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES that we do pray. Hear our prayer and have mercy upon India for Your Name's Sake. By asking in Your Name, we know that YOU WILL DO IT! May all the Praise, and Glory, and Honor be forever, until time Eternal, unto to You! Hallelujah, Amen!"
